Former owner and Vice President of Handys Heating Inc, Gary Kirkendall started Alpine Heating And Cooling in
July of 2003 with a vision of creating one of the most diversified HVAC companies in Northwest Washington.
We are NOT a fireplace shop disguised as a heating company, our focus is HVAC-R and you will find our
personal qualified to install and service everything we sell.
We are fully licensed, Insured and Bonded.

In 2003 Alpine Heating And Cooling was awarded the BEST New Business of the year
award. There is only one chance to win this award during a business's lifetime and we are

Why did I get into the HVAC business?
I do not know if I had a choice, I had been working for my dad off and on since I was 16. Just like he did when he
was young man. A lot of my basic skills come from my father, fortunately not his business skills. Even though
there are a lot of people out there that need heat and you try to help as many as you possible can, you still need
to pay the bills. My father could not say no, this of coarse hurt the family and his business dearly.
When I was 20 he finally decided to fold up the business and he took a job up in Alaska for the following
summer, I ended up working for a heating company out of SW but not for long. I moved on and ended up at a
company out of Mount Vernon, Installing systems in residential spec/custom homes then safeways, burger
kings,cinema 8's, just to name a few and then finally project management/sales. (my private photo album)
After many years I decided its time to get into business for myself. In 1992 myself and a co-worker started
Handys Heating Inc. We where both very ambitious, talented and extremely hard working. We crew the company
from 2 people out of a garage to 34 employees and ended up on the west side of Mount Vernon. By the end of
2002 and even though I had a very comfortable position and owned a substantial portion of the company I felt a
need for change.
In 2003 I decided to start yet a 2nd company, Alpine Heating And Cooling. This company was to be more service
based and concentrate more on providing solid repair service for residential and commercial customers. And
then grow it from there.
What makes me different than other similar businesses in my community?
Alpine Heating And Cooling was started as a service company, not a installation company. This is just the
opposite of most HVAC companies. This gives Alpine a very strong technical advantage and a very strong
customer base. Most HVAC companies start as installation company, their service side is developed because of
the need from their installations. A lot of installing companies rely on service companies to service their
customers. Not Alpine, We are 100% self efficient..
What do I like most about my community?
I don’t think we realize what we have in Skagit County. Look east and you’re in the mountains, look west and you’
re in the ocean. The land here is incredible, the people are very unique and there are times when I wish we
could just slow down the growth a little and enjoy what we have. Skagit County Is incredible.

In the state of Washington ...
- To do ALL aspects of the heating and cooling trade you must have a full General contractors license
(not a specialty). Alpine has a full Generals Contractors license with coverage.
- To service or maintain and at times install heating or cooling equipment you MUST have a electrical
contractors license. Alpine has a Electrical Contractors License with coverage.
- To service or maintain and at times install heating or cooling equipment you MUST have a electrical
contractors license and there must be an individual who possess a current Administrators or Masters
electrical license. The owner of Alpine poses a Master Electrical License.
- We strongly recommend that if you are considering hiring a heating and or cooling contractor either to
service, maintain or install heating or cooling equipment you should make sure they are properly
licensed. Ask for there UBI # (Alpines 602 302 953) and ask who is their administrator and check this
link.
